Should Keywords Be Translated?

When translating websites, our clients usually ask how we go about translating keywords and page titles. Our answer is always the same: localization, research and more research.

Translation is never verbatim. As a linguist, you always have to interpret what is said and find the most appropriate expression in the language you are translating to with the dialect most appropriate to the region the language is spoken to. For example a Spanish search term may differ from the same Spanish search term in Argentina. That's localization. 

With keywords and pages titles, it's even more than that. Once you have chosen the right translation, a translator must analyze it to see how often the term is being searched for in the target language. If your keyword translation is accurate but is not search friendly, a translator often has to communicate the situation to the client and come up for the best fit solution together, be it modifying the translated phrase to a more searchable one or rewriting the English to fit the translation.
