Why Translation May Seem So Expensive

Oftentimes, we get a request for translation and when a potential client who has never been involved in translation project gets a quote he is shocked. Understandably so: translation is not cheap.

But let's take a look at why there is such a disconnect between what the client thinks translation should cost and its real price.

There is a misconception that if a person speaks a target language, that automatically makes him a translator. That's far from truth. Let's take English for example. If an individual speaks it, that doesn't mean he has a mastery of the language necessary to write a manual or a handbook. Let's just say you wouldn't pull a first person off the street to write a manual for a turbine simply because he said "yes" and he doesn't have an accent.

Same concept applies to translation. Yes, the translator must be a native speaker of the target language but in addition, he must possess an excellent command of the source language. Moreover, the translator has to specialize in the subject matter and have the necessary education and training in the field to deliver the right translation.
