I had a call the other day from a potential client who said
that she wanted to translate some documents into some pretty rare languages. What
she said next was quite shocking: She told me she already translated the same
document into 15 languages through one of search engine machine translators and
was and was ready to publish the material, no editing, no proofreading. Just
search engine machine translation. The only reason she was referring to us she
said was that she could not find some of the languages in Google Translate. She
was confident that machine translation gives a publish ready translation which
made me shiver. I am not sure if that is an isolated incident, but it seems a discussion
regarding a machine translation should be had rather sooner than later.
What is Machine Translation?
First and foremost, Machine Translation (MT) is free! And
when you say free, people listen. But when something is free there is usually a
catch and in case of MT the catch is that MT in its current form cannot act as
a translation provider. It is merely a supporting piece of technology for
translators to help us keep current and future translations consistent, create
glossaries and terminology lists. There are different types of MTs such as Google
and Bing and more specialized such as Translation Memories (we'll talk about
Translation Memories in next segment).
I am not saying search engines translations are useless.
They can be used to translate a sentence or two and be 80%-99% accurate. But
still, one is still left to guess the rest of the translated content. And
guessing is fine so long as what you are translating is an email from a Facebook
friend from Germany. However if you decide to run a million dollar
contract or a manual on how to put a crib together through a machine
translation for your client in Argentina, China, Canada and Russia, chances are
your client would have to do a lot of hard guessing on that translation which
could lead to, well, your guess is as good as mine.
